In my previous post, “Something is Better than Nothing,” I confessed that I didn’t want to make a post that day. I had been in a funk earlier that day.
What got me out of it? I went for a ruck.
I put on a backpack with 30 lbs. in it and went for a 4-mile walk.
By the time I got back home, I was in a better mood.
“Get out of your head and get into your body” is a maxim I have heard attributed to Tim Ferriss. It is good advice. Essentially, when you are stuck in your head, don’t try to think your way out. Act your way out.
Physically.
Move.
That could be a walk around the block, exercising, or washing the dishes. Anything that requires you to move for more than 5-10 minutes. It doesn’t need to be long, but it needs to be long enough.
A walk around the block doesn’t solve your problems, but it can change your mood.
Doing the dishes doesn’t fix everything, but it can adjust your mindset.
This is another way of saying that you don’t feel your way into acting; you act your way into feeling.
This is why the solution to a bad day is (often) a good workout.
The next time you are feeling funky, don’t overthink it.
Just do something.
With your body.
You’ll be glad you did.
