Jedi Master Yoda once told Luke Skywalker, “Do or do not. There is no try.”
With all due respect to Yoda, I think he was wrong. There is a lot of try. In fact, there should be more try.
Many of us never try because we are afraid.
Afraid of failure.
Afraid of success.
Afraid of what others will think.
Afraid it won’t be perfect.
Our fear cripples us, so we don’t try.
But most of us are not trying to levitate an X-Wing fighter out of a swamp on the planet Dagobah.
We just want to run a 5k.
Or ask that person out.
Or break up with that person.
Or go back to school.
Or apply for the promotion.
Or a million other things that we want to do but are afraid to try.
I wish Yoda had told Luke, “Try. And try again. And try again. Until you do it.” I think that would have been better advice. At least for us non-Jedis.
If we try, sometimes it will work out. Sometimes it won’t. And we can try again until it does work out. Or until we decide it is no longer worth trying.
However, what I think is more important than whether it works out or not is that we tried. We tried! We had courage. We didn’t allow fear to control us.
And isn’t that the type of person you want to be?
That is the type of person I want to be.
TRY!
