In order to be successful, your team needs people other than you.
You might be amazing. Legitimately.
You might be the star. Genuinely.
But you aren’t good at everything.
No one is.
But are you acting like you are?
Do you try to do everything?
Do you try to manage everything?
If it has to be done right, are you the one who has to do it?
Do you recruit and hire people who aren’t as good as you?
You might have said, “No” to those questions, even if the answer is “Yes”, because you know that you are supposed to say, “No.” Here is a follow-up that might be more difficult to answer.
Who on your team is better than you at something important?
Who is it, and what important thing are they better at?
If you can’t answer that question with at least a few names, there might be a problem.
For your team to succeed and accomplish great things, everything needs to be done well.
Everything.
You are good at some of the things.
You need people on your team who are good at all the other things.
Your team needs what you’re not good at.
Without them, your team will not succeed.
It is a helpful reminder as a leader. Be humble.
It is also encouraging to know, as a team member, that you are needed to win.
Remind yourself.
Tell your team.
Your team needs what you’re not good at.
