What I Read in February

The River of Doubt by Candice Millard

This was a fascinating book. President Teddy Roosevelt, after his Presidency, goes to South America on an expedition along the Amazon. He almost dies. Recommended.

Theo of Golden by Allen Levi (Fiction)

This is a wonderful and beautiful book. Most of the books I read I check out for free through Libby (read about My Love for Libby). This is a book that I decided to buy after I read it because I will want to read it again and again. Without giving anything away, a man named Theo arrives in the town of Golden, Georgia and begins to befriend the people around him. Who is he and why is he doing what he is doing? We discover this through the story. I highly recommend it.

The Gales of November by John Bacon

This is the true story of the sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald, a shipping vessel on the Great Lakes, during a storm of the century in November of 1975. I knew nothing of this ship, of the history of shipping, the life of sailors, of the Great Lakes. Nothing. I never would have read this book without a recommendation. Thank goodness for recommendations. It was a great, educational read. Recommended.

The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry by Gabrielle Zevin (Fiction)

I read another book by this author called Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow a few months ago and liked it. I liked this book more. The story is about a widower who owns a bookstore on an island in the Northeastern United States. He is, understandably, depressed and discouraged. Some things happen that begin to change the course of his life. It is a character-driven book with lots of talk about books and literature. I enjoyed this book.

P.S. Did you find this post helpful? If so, I have two quick requests:
— First, would you subscribe to the blog? It is an encouragement to me.
— Second, who is one person you think would also benefit from this post? Would you mind forwarding it to them?
Thank you!
