I came across this during a training session at work. It comes from a book titled “A Beautiful Constraint” about using limitations for creative productivity.
Rather than defaulting to “we can’t do that” you default to “We can if…”
Then you get creative with ideas that would allow you to do it.
We can go on the European vacation if…
… We get part time jobs and save up for it.
… We stay in hostels.
… We sell the house.
… We cash out our 401k.
Even if you decide you don’t want to do something given the “if” requirements, at least you are deciding not to do it because you don’t like what it would require to do it rather than feeling like you didn’t have an option.
It is an active, positive approach rather than a passive, negative approach.
I love it.
Try it out.
We Can If…
P.S. Did you find this post helpful? If so, I have two quick requests:
— First, would you subscribe to the blog? It is an encouragement to me.
— Second, who is one person you think would also benefit from this post? Would you mind forwarding it to them?
Thank you!
