I believe things that aren’t true. I know I do. I am sure of it. If nothing else, it is a matter of the odds. I have thousands upon thousands (millions?) of beliefs about lots of different things. Surely I am wrong about some of them, right?
The problem is that I don’t know which beliefs aren’t true or I wouldn’t believe them.
I want to minimize the number of things I believe that are untrue. One way is to explore my beliefs and evaluate the reasons I hold them. Hold loosely to those beliefs with weak reasons. Hold more tightly to those beliefs with stronger reasons.
Another way is by simply having fewer opinions and saying, “I don’t know” more often.
I hope that when I stand before God someday I will find out which beliefs were true and which were not. I hope in that moment God will say something like, “You were wrong on this issue, but you tried to get it right.” That would be much better than hearing, “You knew what was true, you were just afraid,” or “You didn’t care what was true because you had already made up your mind.”
Yeah, I want to avoid that.
