Maxim #2: Do Hard Things

I don’t like hard things. I like easy things. Seriously. I am someone who naturally values comfort and ease. That is true physically, relationally, commercially, whatever. I just want things to be easy.

But life is not always easy.

In fact, sometimes life is very, very hard.

And it can be hard in many different ways. Physically, relationally, professionally, financially, spiritually. You name it. It can be hard.

At different times and in different ways, hardships have felt overwhelming to me. I have felt small, and weak, and afraid. I didn’t like that feeling. I didn’t want to be small, weak, or afraid. I wanted to be strong. I wanted to be tough.

How do you become strong and tough? By doing hard things. That is true for almost any area.

Want to become physically strong and tough? Do physically hard things.

Want to become financially strong? Do financially hard things.

Want to become relationally strong? Do relationally hard things.

Part of the value in doing hard things is developing strength in the specific context. Just as important, if not more important, is developing the courage to do the hard things because doing hard things is often scary.

But I have to remind myself of this regularly because I forget easily.

Do hard things. It will be worth it.
