One of the first and most important to me, I learned “Disciple Equals Freedom” from Jocko Willink, retired Navy SEAL, author, speaker, business owner and all-around rock star. It is a helpful reminder and encouragement across many areas of life.
If you have the discipline to work out and stay fit, you will have the freedom of health and mobility for longer.
If you have the discipline to save and invest money while you can earn it, you will have the freedom to use it later when your savings earn money for you.
If you have the discipline to practice a skill, you will have the freedom to use that skill at higher levels.
You get the point.
It isn’t simply discipline for the sake of discipline, although I think there is value in that. It is what the discipline earns you. Freedom.
I want to be physically free.
I want to be financially free.
I want to be professionally free.
In so many ways across the spectrum of my life, I want to be free. That freedom doesn’t come easily or by accident. It takes work. It takes discipline.
I have a shirt that I bought from Jocko’s store that says, “Discipline Equals Freedom” on it. I wear it on Monday mornings when I work out. It motivates me to start the day and the week off right.
I want to be a disciplined man, so I practice discipline. This maxim or soundtrack helps remind me of the importance and the why.
